JAY ROX ADVISES ARTISTS TO HIRE BUSINESS MINDED PEOPLE IF THEY AREN’T TO AVOID BEING BROKE AT THE END OF THEIR CAREERS

Artist Jay Rox speaking to Kenny T on Kenny T 1 ON 1 podcast shared some notes on how viable the music business is in Zambia and what artists ought to do in order to capitalize on their craft’s monetary potential.

Jay Rox told Kenny T that the music business is viable if the artists do the work, position, and builds their brand as they’ll make a lot of money through endorsements and shows.

“If you don’t do the work, it’s a very dangerous space to be in because then now there’s no guarantee that the amount of money you’re putting in is coming back,” he added.

Roxa stressed that most artists are not in a space where they think about hiring a financial and/or marketing person to analyse the feasibility of the investments in their craft by looking at elements such as environment, demographics and consumer interests.

He continued stating that because of that mindset, artists end up having hit songs and less money hence they get forced to “fake it until they make it” which is usually unsustainable if the artist doesn’t get the right people to position their band to generate revenue.

“I think it’s important as artists to really move away from the bubble. And if you can’t be business minded, get business people to think on your behalf,” said Jay Rox.

He further advised that after generating money, the artist are supposed to set aside some of it to hire qualified professionals to help them with the business side of things.

“We also don’t want a situation where when an artist dies, then the stories come out and you can’t control them. You can’t keep them locked because at that point, all the information comes out, and we discover that there’s not so much that was done.” he said.
