WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE DEATH OF PARAMOUNT CHIEF MPEZENI?

The passing of Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the history of the Ngoni people of Zambia.

As the custodian of Ngoni culture, traditions, and unity for over four decades, his leadership leaves a lasting legacy that will be remembered for generations.
Many people are now asking: Who will succeed him?
In Ngoni tradition, the throne does not automatically pass to the chief’s eldest child.
Instead, succession is guided by customary law, royal lineage, and consultations among senior members of the royal family and traditional leaders.
The process is designed to ensure that the most suitable candidate from the royal Jere lineage is chosen to lead the Ngoni Kingdom.
Following the death of a Paramount Chief, a period of mourning is traditionally observed for a year.
During this time, royal elders and kingmakers hold consultations and perform important cultural rites before a successor is announced and formally installed.
Although reports indicate that Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV had a daughter and no son, this does not necessarily create a succession crisis.
Throughout history, many African royal systems, including that of the Ngoni people, have selected successors from among brothers, nephews, cousins, or other eligible members of the royal house when direct male heirs were unavailable.
At present, no official successor has been announced. Any names being mentioned publicly remain speculation until the Ngoni Royal Establishment and the relevant traditional authorities make an official declaration.
As the nation mourns, Zambians join the Ngoni people in honoring a leader who dedicated his life to preserving culture, promoting unity, and serving his people with distinction.
May His Royal Highness Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV rest in peace.
