BOOMPLAY OWES JEMAX AT LEAST 4.4 MILLION KWACHA, THE RAPPER CRIES FOR HELP TO GET HIS MONEY

Rapper JEMAX took to his socials to vent out after digital streaming platform Boomplay failed to pay him for over fifty million streams he accumulated on his 2024 album The Boogeyman.

“Am disappointed with Boomplay. After getting over 50 million streams on the platform for my BOOGEYMAN ALBUM, I have never gotten any payment,” the rapper wrote in part.

The rapper also revealed that he had tried all necessary steps to get the streaming platform to pay what they owe him but to no avail.

The Boogeyman album has accumulated over 64.4 million streams on the platform since its release in May last year. These streams translate to a payout estimated in the range of $193,000(4,492,256.43 Kwacha) to $322,000 USD(7,487,118.24 Kwacha).

Most recent estimates place Boomplay’s payout at around $0.003 to $0.005 per stream. For Zambian artists, this figure is not fixed as factors such as listener’s country, listeners being paid subscribers, or ad supported free tier and distribution deals, among others play a major role in determining the final payout.

According to multiple sources, Boomplay’s payments are proportionate to its monthly subscription revenue rather than fixed payout per stream.

With the above-mentioned information, rapper JEMAX was at least supposed to get a minimum of 4.49 million Kwacha considering 0.003 dollars per stream.

This figure, however, could be lower or higher, but it provides a fair estimate of how much he should have gotten with over 64.4 million streams on his album.

Zambian artists began boycotting distributing their music to Boomplay early this year after noticing its poor pay and delayed payments.

A few weeks ago, DJ Mzenga Man opened the curtains, revealing the over two years of the platform not paying artists problems and further calling for it to be sued.

JEMAX demanded answers from Boomplay and further called on Zambia Association of Musicians(ZAM), National Arts Council(NAC), and Ministry of Arts to intervene.

ZAM president Brian Bwembya alias B Flow quoted the rapper’s post and called on him to come to the association’s offices and share the issue’s details.
