LEGENDARY PRODUCER CHALI ‘BRAVO’ MULALAMI DIES AGED 50

Music producer CHALI MULALAMI also known as Chali ‘Bravo’ Mulalami died yesterday at Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital in Lusaka at the age of 50.

“Chali passed away this evening at Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital in Lusaka following a very short illness,” the Zambia Association of Musicians announced in part.

During his time as an active professional music producer at his company Sling Beats Entertainment – starting in 2003, Chali Bravo produced and released music for several artists including GENERAL OZZY, HAMOOBA, K MILLIAN, KANJI, MAMPI and ROBERTO.

His intro “Chachine Chachine” featured on almost every hit song from that time until around 2009 when the producer stepped back from music production because he had gotten married and other things in his personal life.

The producer would then venture into TV production working with ZNBC and MUVI TV, and event production. He also featured as a judge on a NEXUS MUSIC competition and formed a partnership with the music label as an investor in the Sling Beats Renaissance, a subsidiary of Sling Beats Entertainment.

During this period, he also worked as a regional manager for Sony Music Africa’s music and video distribution company Rockstar 4000.

Chali Bravo who didn’t pursue tertiary education attributed his success in the entertainment business to having taught himself how to run businesses early as he ventured into several businesses just after high school, including a real estate and property management company at just 19 years old.

Even after stepping back from music production, he still released other projects featuring established artists and, up and coming artists – something he said he liked to do in oder to give unknown artists an opportunity.

His death has left many of his music lovers who grew up listening to the music he produced shocked and quoting a DANNY KAYA song “WE’LL MISS YOU MWANDI.”

Meanwhile, ZAM said in part, “He didn’t just produce songs, he created a new sonic identity for our nation,” describing his music producing career.

The celebrated producer leaves behind three children, a boy and two girls from his previous marriage.
