From Blantyre to Windhoek: The Unfolding Legacy of Petersen Zangaze and DjSiya Namibia

Petersen Zangaze, a well-known singer from Zambia, set off on an incredible adventure in 2009 that would not only shape his career but also create enduring friendships and cooperative projects throughout Africa. This journey started when Tay Grin of Malawi invited him to play at the opening of his “Black Rhino” record label. It continued with special meetings and collaborations in Namibia with well-known musicians and producers like Maj Beats and DjSiya. This article details Petersen’s journeys, the relationships he made, and the influence his music had on culture.

Petersen Zangaze writes “In 2009, Tay Grin invited me to perform at the launch of his ‘Black Rhino’ music label at the college of medicine in Blantyre, Malawi. He invited Nameless & Wahu Kagwi from Kenya, Gal Level from Namibia, Buffalo Souljah from Zimbabwe, Dj Waxxy Nigerian who was based in South Africa then.

On my entourage I carried Ringman of Soundwave Zambia , Ben Blazer of Blazer Events , Joe Crazy & UniQ Skillz and we all lodged and stayed at Nyambadwe Lodge, where I met Tay Grin’ partner then, Majumi Gondwe aka Maj Beats, a Malawian who grew up in the USA and had a studio within the premises of the lodge we were staying at.

Maj Beats and I became good friends such that the following year 2010, when he decided to relocate from Blantyre, Malawi to Windhoek, Namibia, on his drive to Namibia through Zambia, he spent two days at my house in Libala.

Late that same year I decided to fly to Namibia for the first to visit Maj Beats who received me at the airport with a Namibian artist called Fishman (we made a smash hit titled ‘Memories’ together) produced by Maj beats.

I stayed in Namibia for a week, Maj Beats introduced me to top shots like King TeeDee, Gaza, Dj Keboz among others. Through my first and second visits to Windhoek Maj Beats kept telling me of a DJ I needed to meet, he said this is the only deejay who promoted and supported Zambian music.

“This guy plays at a Club in Khomasdale called Ara Bar, he is big on Zambian music”.

On my third trip to Namibia, I was invited Sula of Ogopa Butterfly for a tour with Gal Level that started in Katima Mulilo, Rundu and later in Windhoek along Allan Toniks of Uganda.

My 5th trip, I recorded another smash hit titled ‘I believe’ with Linda a secondary school girl by then, this tune is big on TikTok today and by then it propelled another tour in the northern part of the country.

This was when I met my brother himself, through blood and works, we just never knew. He has taken me to Namibia for shows a number of countless times and we have made music together. We have Kabunya, Bushimbe, Sigeje among many works together. In 2012 when he had no single song, when I was launching my Job 13:13 album at the Barclays sports complex, I brought him into Zambia to be the MC for my tour through up to the copperbelt alongside Man Popo (MHSRIP).

Today he is an international super star, touring the UK this September. Ladies and gentlemen…..

The life of Petersen Zangaze serves as an example of how music may bridge cultural divides and bring people together. His trip from Blantyre to Windhoek, which was characterised by meaningful partnerships and deep friendships, is still an inspiration to people all over the continent. The worldwide success of DjSiya Namibia shows how these relationships have opened doors and brought about recognition on a global scale, underscoring the significance of cooperation and unity in the music business.
