Whilst on Benas Banda’s “The 50K Podcast,” Saliyah Miyanda who is popularly known as Vubwi shared insights into her life as she talked about her feature in the famous Zambian telenovela Mpali, radio presenting, being a nurse and comedian.
The two kicked off by talking about her feature in Mpali. Responding to Benas’ question on how she got the role and if she’s still on the show, Saliyah responded, “I’m on there from time to time, when they need to shoot scenes in the village.”
Revealing how she got the role, Saliyah told Benas, “In 2021 November, Anne Kansiime came to Zambia, and we had a comedy show. I was the closing stand up comic and Frank Sibbuku was in the audience, and he loved my act and then like a week later he called me and said oh we have a role for you in Mpali.”
Saliyah Miyanda alias Vubwi further gave an insight into the genesis of her career as a comedian and content creator. She said, “I started as a stand-up comedian as opposed to like most of the other content creators, especially the comedians. They started with the skits, then they went to the stage. I started with the stage, and then I went to the skits.”
She continued, “I did not want, I did not intend to create skits, I didn’t even want to create a page but somebody said no, I’ll send you a notification very soon, just accept. Ine yabwela notification kuti admin, ah! What do you mean? That was in late 2018.”
But it was until Mr. Chingwala pusuaded her before a comedy show to make skits so that people would get acquainted to her that her career as a media personality took off. Vubwi highlighted that it was a difficult thing as she had to juggle between her education and social media. The comedian was in her 3rd year pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Saliyah Miyanda revealed that at the time she skyrocketed to social media fame, she received a couple of side eyes from her colleagues during her nursing practical years, but overall, many embrace her. Vubwi (Saliyah Miyanda), who is now a qualified nurse, said she hopes that one day she would be a lecturer or a practising nurse in a hospital.
“I’m always singing. When I’m anxious, I sing a lot just to relax. I’ve always been doing since the time I was a little little baby,” Saliyah Miyanda told Benas as she answered a question regarding her musical career journey highlighting that singing has been a coping mechanism for the creative.
Vubwi alias Saliyah Miyanda further mentioned that, like her other talents, she never thought they could work to what they are now. With curiosity, she hit the studio, recording her first song,’I’LL BE FINE’, and then, due to public demand, she released two more songs in the subsequent years.
Saliyah Miyanda is truly a multi talented personality as she is a radio presenter, actor, comedian, singer, and nurse. Despite highlighting difficulties in the beginning of her pursuits, she’s always found her footing, hence becoming what she is now, an adored creative.
