“WHAT A GREAT SHADOW TO LIVE UNDER” – TOWELA KAIRA SPEAKS ON BEING UNDER HER BROTHER’S SHADOWS AND JOINING NEXUS

PLEASE NOTE: This article is an adaptation from Towela Kaira’s interview on Kenny T 1 ON 1 podcast episode 18.

While on Kenny T 1 ON 1 podcast, Towela Kaira spoke about her transition, leaving Mungoma TV series where she featured in two seasons to fully pursue her musical career.

“I would ask my brothers, who can I go to? What can I, you know, and stuff like that. So here we are now,” said Towela Kaira, highlighting the huge backup she had from her brothers Macky 2 and Chef 187 as she transioned to become a full-time time musical artist.

With Towela Kaira being the third person pursuing a professional career in music in her family, Kenny T asked, “Did you have fears of always just being in the shadows of your brothers?”

She unapologetically, “Never, it never bothered me if I was standing next to somebody greater than me because I know I’m a great person myself, you know?”

She continued to say that she is never jealous of people doing better than her and that being in their shadows is a privilege as a lot people would want their mentorship or to just ask for advise when they want to release music.

“Oh, what a great shadow to live under, you know, you, you are living under which shadow first? You know, it’s a privilege, guys. Yeah,” said Towela Kaira, further reaffirming that it never bothers her.

As the conversation went on as Towela Kaira would reveal how her brother Macky 2 hooked her up with a record deal at NEXUS Music. “My brother gave me a call, somebody’s going to call you, pick up, and I picked up the phone,” she said.

As Macky 2 said, the owner of NEXUS Music Mr Ngulube would call her and arrange a meeting between her, T Sean and Afunika – the three would get singed to NEXUS Music and she would go ahead and release some of her top hits.

Towela Kaira defies traditional norms that often glorifies individualism and rivalry as she sends a reminder that growth doesn’t always have to come from struggle or separation further solidifying that it comes from the courage to stand close to greatness and still walk your own path.

Rather than her competing with those around her, Towela Kaira has collaborated, learned, and now thrives — further proving that being in someone’s shadow doesn’t mean you’re not shining too.
