SAMPA THE GREAT says music that is in “language” moves the furthest as people are drawn to different stories and cultures, but in the beginning, she was scared to sing in her language thinking she might not connect with a global audience.
“It allowed me to work with producers from Zambia, producers who understood the rhythms and melodies I grew up with. I didn’t have to do too much, and I’ve grown to not only love my culture, but love sharing it.
You move around the world with it, a fingerprint. It can’t be replaced, it can’t be removed. It’s part of you,” the rapper added on doing music in her “language.”
She was speaking at the Mawazine Festival in Morocco in June.
